About the artist
Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was a Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print artist who was active during the late Edo period and the Meiji era. He was known for his depictions of kabuki actors and scenes from Japanese theater, as well as for his portraits of beautiful women and samurai warriors.
In addition to his prints, Kunichika also created illustrations for newspapers and magazines, and he designed costumes and sets for kabuki productions. He was a prolific artist, and it is estimated that he created over 10,000 designs during his career. Today, his prints are highly sought after by collectors and are held in the collections of museums around the world.
