About the artist

Hiroshige II was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who lived during the Edo period. He was born in 1826 in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan, as the son of a fireman. His birth name was Tokubei. He later became a pupil and adopted son of the famous ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige, and took over his master’s studio and name after Hiroshige’s death in 1858.

Hiroshige II continued to produce ukiyo-e prints in his master’s style and often depicted landscapes and famous places in Japan, as well as actors and scenes from kabuki theater. However, his career was cut short by his early death at the age of 43 in 1869. Despite his relatively short career, Hiroshige II left behind a significant body of work that continues to be admired by collectors and art enthusiasts today.
